Brooke Gassiot makes paintings, drawings and installations that center on her experiences of pregnancy, birth, motherhood and living in a female body. Her practice focuses on the physicality, emotionality and cyclic nature of these experiences, often coexisting alongside depictions of flowers. Intimacy is at the core of all of her work, addressing the simultaneous existence of abject and sublime facets implicit in the relationship with her body. Her work confronts these experiences – working through the ever changing terrain of her own body while navigating the roles she has played. In Gassiot’s work, hysterectomy scars are exposed, flowers topple over under their own weight, breasts are stretched by tiny hands. The subject of “bathers” appears, referencing Modernist portrayals of bathing women and the Renaissance Madonna. Imagined coming of age rituals & domestic scenes of mothering are recurring themes Each work is a window into not what it merely looks like to be a woman, but rather how it feels to live within her skin.
